Topic: Discussion Sunday

Sunday November 18, 2018

This week we will have a panel talking about UUA Social Justice groups. Arline LeMear will speak about Chalice Lighters; David Delk will speak about Oregon UU Voices for Justice; and other UUSC groups.

At 12:30, after the social hour, there will be a discussion on the stage in the sanctuary. The topic will be “Rational thinking and Denial. How our subconscious affects our thoughts and actions. This includes how we block, or deny the existence, of certain unpleasant thoughts from our consciousness.”

As always, there will be Religious Education for the children following the “Moment with the Children” near the beginning of the service. And there will be coffee and social time downstairs at the PAC following the service.

Sunday November 4, 2018

It is election season, what better thing to talk about than the meaning of democracy, the fifth Unitarian Universalist principle. Carolyn Sinnett and David Delk will discuss what democracy means to them, followed by a general discussion. In all of the noise of politics, let’s remind ourselves why we have elections.

There will be no discussion group this week.

As always, there will be Religious Education for the children following the “Moment with the Children” near the beginning of the service. And there will be coffee and social time downstairs at the PAC following the service.

Sunday October 7, 2018

Nancy Cook will lead this participatory “This We Believe” service which invites UU members and guests to consider diverse, often nontraditional beliefs surrounding the practice of prayer. Forrest Duggan and Monica Van Steenberg will offer prepared comments before passing the mic to the wider congregation. Veja Lahti will close our service with drumming as a form of prayer. Come just to listen, or possibly to share.

As always, there will be Religious Education for the children following the “Moment with the Children” near the beginning of the service. And there will be coffee and social time downstairs at the PAC following the service.

At 10 am, before the service, there will be a discussion in room 109 downstairs. The topic will be “Humor: What is funny? What makes you laugh? Come with jokes, cartoons, etc.”

Ann Lederer from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) will speak about how the community can stand up for abused and neglected children. This is an opportunity to learn what this program offers to families and the need for volunteers. As a longtime CASA volunteer, Mayor Arline LaMear will introduce Ms. Lederer.

CASA trains community volunteers to stand up for abused and neglected children. Their advocacy helps ensure that these children have the best possible chance for a safer, more secure home life. Ann Lederer, was the Executive Director of CASA from 2010-2016. She is now serving as the Program Manager. Her responsibilities include resource development and maintenance, organizational and program planning, community and public relations, personnel management, fiscal management, volunteer recruitment, training and support, and court representation.

The regular 1st and 3rd Sunday discussions begin this week with Tod Lundy leading a discussion about “Life after death: How has this belief affected your life? Rev. Keith Arnold and David Burrows, well-known UU musicians serving Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, CO., will grace us with their music as they come through Astoria on their way to the UU Musicians Network conference in Portland. The discussion will be “The role of music in UU Sunday services”. We will meet in the auditorium because Keith is a wonderful pianist and will present some of his music, so we need the grand piano. Both men will take part in our discussion, offering their perspective as religious musicians.
