“Switched, not at Birth but at Adulthood”

Steven Peterson shares some of his life experience: born and raised in a Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christian household, my life was supposed to be a lot different than it turned out. I was brought up with the weight of expectation, the expectation of what I should believe, the expectation of how I should behave, the expectation of who I would become. None of those expectations have come to pass, mainly because the indoctrination didn’t take. People who have heard the full story of my path from that background to where and who I am now have asked if maybe I was supposed to have been raised in a different household and the babies were switched at birth. My response to that is “no, I was switched at adulthood.” As a child I put on the mask and conformed to what was expected, and as an adult I have left that world behind. I look at our UU fellowship, and I see people like myself, liberal of religion, liberal of thought, liberal of ideals; I think most of us want to be able to look at our fellow humans and see the good in each of them. Perhaps my experience can help us all to understand some of our fellow Earthlings who cannot see the larger world because of their fundamental blinders.
