Member Nancy Cook will approach this month’s theme from a variety of lenses, including her own experiences as a mother, sister, instructor of literature, environmental activist, and engaged citizen of these challenging times. Her sermon will draw upon the Biblical story of Abel and Cain [Genesis 4.9], James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues, shame researcher Brene Brown, and wisdom gleaned through Al-Anon Family Groups who emphasize setting boundaries as an important form of self-care which allows for sustained, genuine support of others. How can we resist injustice with an expansive sense of brotherhood while taking care not to overwhelm ourselves with the burdens of harsh judgment or fears for tomorrow? This week’s sermon will present one woman’s reflection on this important theme.
