The Divine Feminine, The Earth Mother

February 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Our Lay Leader this week is Steven Peterson.

The Topic: The Divine Feminine, The Earth Mother

In the 19th century, first-wave feminists were publishing ideas of a female deity, and the suppression of women and female spirituality under the patriarchal Church. At the same time, anthropologists began examining the ideas of prehistoric matriarchal Goddess cultures in the Mediterranean region, with some claiming that female theologies emerged in Prehistoric Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period around 30,000 years ago.

Decades later, starting from the 1970s into the current day, the Goddess movement has emerged as an international cultural phenomenon. Women are recognized in many religious organizations as spiritual beings and are welcomed in leadership and teaching roles – we are moving in the direction of a post patriarchal society, though it sometimes seems there are miles more to travel and much more work to be done in this area.

Who or what is the Goddess? What is Goddess Spirituality? Theology or Thealogy?

We are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional but strongly advised. If you are not feeling well, please wear a mask, or attend via Zoom.

Child Care Is Provided.

Join us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!
