SUMMARY:The Divine Feminine\, The Earth Mother
DESCRIPTION:Our Lay Leader this week is Steven Peterson. \nThe Topic: The Divine Feminine\, The Earth Mother \nIn the 19th century\, first-wave feminists were publishing ideas of a female deity\, and the suppression of women and female spirituality under the patriarchal Church. At the same time\, anthropologists began examining the ideas of prehistoric matriarchal Goddess cultures in the Mediterranean region\, with some claiming that female theologies emerged in Prehistoric Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period around 30\,000 years ago. \nDecades later\, starting from the 1970s into the current day\, the Goddess movement has emerged as an international cultural phenomenon. Women are recognized in many religious organizations as spiritual beings and are welcomed in leadership and teaching roles – we are moving in the direction of a post patriarchal society\, though it sometimes seems there are miles more to travel and much more work to be done in this area. \nWho or what is the Goddess? What is Goddess Spirituality? Theology or Thealogy? \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional but strongly advised. If you are not feeling well\, please wear a mask\, or attend via Zoom. \nChild Care Is Provided. \n \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:Mystery's Meetingplace"
DESCRIPTION:“Mystery’s Meetingplace”\n  \nReverend Heather Janules \nUnitarian Universalists often name the experience of “transcending mystery and wonder” as a foundational element of a spiritual life. This service will reflect on two contemporary stories about the intermingling of the sacred and the secular\, inviting us to consider how we welcome mystery and wonder\, within and beyond sanctuaries on Sunday morning. Service written by Rev. Heather Janules\, UUA Congregational Life Staff in the New England Region\, and presented by Laura Gordon. \nArtwork by Rhonda Piasecki. Our monthly them is “What is the Divine”.

SUMMARY:"Can We Be Our Brother's Keeper"
DESCRIPTION:Member Nancy Cook will approach this month’s theme from a variety of lenses\, including her own experiences as a mother\, sister\, instructor of literature\, environmental activist\, and engaged citizen of these challenging times. Her sermon will draw upon the Biblical story of Abel and Cain [Genesis 4.9]\, James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues\, shame researcher Brene Brown\, and wisdom gleaned through Al-Anon Family Groups who emphasize setting boundaries as an important form of self-care which allows for sustained\, genuine support of others. How can we resist injustice with an expansive sense of brotherhood while taking care not to overwhelm ourselves with the burdens of harsh judgment or fears for tomorrow? This week’s sermon will present one woman’s reflection on this important theme. \n \nChild Care Is Provided. \n \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:"The Good Heart"
DESCRIPTION:“The Good Heart” — Join Rev. Mira on this Easter Sunday in the midst of Passover as we explore our April mystery “What is Good?”. In these tumultuous times it can be hard to see\, be\, and trust the Good in life. Sometimes it can feel like there is no good choice available\, or that nothing good is coming our way. What can we learn from this season of spring and religious observance to point us toward the good? \nChild Care is provided.\nEvery month we are featuring artwork relevant to our monthly theme. This month our theme is “What Is Good”. Laura Janes is this month’s contributor. SUMMARY:Beltane
DESCRIPTION:Our local CUUPS Chapter will conduct their annual Beltane ritual. Beltane is the Gaelic May Day festival\, marking the beginning of summer. It is traditionally held on 1 May\, or about midway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. \nHistorically\, it was widely observed in Ireland\, Scotland\, and the Isle of Man. It is one of the four main Gaelic seasonal festivals—along with Samhain\, Imbolc\, and Lughnasadh—and is similar to the Welsh Calan Mai. \nBeltane involved fire rituals believed to protect people\, livestock and crops. \nChild Care is provided.\n\nEvery month we are featuring artwork relevant to our monthly theme. SUMMARY:"The Stories We Tell"
DESCRIPTION:From heroism overcoming darkness to sinister origins begetting twisted\, greedy\, and power-hungry villains\, every archetypal story deals in the tension of good versus evil. But does this reflect our real lives and the people we encounter? Whether or not there is innate truth to it\, what is so alluring about evil?\nRev. Mira Keplar shares her thoughts on this phenomenon. \n\nEvery month we feature theme related artwork from a local artist. SUMMARY:"Switched\, not at Birth but at Adulthood"
DESCRIPTION:Steven Peterson shares some of his life experience: born and raised in a Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christian household\, my life was supposed to be a lot different than it turned out. I was brought up with the weight of expectation\, the expectation of what I should believe\, the expectation of how I should behave\, the expectation of who I would become. None of those expectations have come to pass\, mainly because the indoctrination didn’t take. People who have heard the full story of my path from that background to where and who I am now have asked if maybe I was supposed to have been raised in a different household and the babies were switched at birth. My response to that is “no\, I was switched at adulthood.” As a child I put on the mask and conformed to what was expected\, and as an adult I have left that world behind. I look at our UU fellowship\, and I see people like myself\, liberal of religion\, liberal of thought\, liberal of ideals; I think most of us want to be able to look at our fellow humans and see the good in each of them. Perhaps my experience can help us all to understand some of our fellow Earthlings who cannot see the larger world because of their fundamental blinders. \n\nEvery month we feature theme related artwork from a local artist. This month Shawn Taylor has offered a concept video\, titled “There Goes Mo”. related to this month’s theme which is “What Is Evil”. SUMMARY:"Nuclear Weapons"
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear proliferation has been a threat to the world since the U.S. bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The nuclear reactor that melted down in Chernobyl is now in the middle of a war zone. DOGE made a mistake when they fired 300 workers at the National Nuclear Security Administration\, the managers of our nation’s nuclear weapons. Now we have a reckless war with Iran\, with the argument that Iran was weeks away from having a nuclear warhead being one justification for our administration’s aggression. David Delk has thought about nuclear weapons for a long time and shares his insights. \nChild Care is provided.\n  \n  \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:"Moral Imagination"
DESCRIPTION:Unitarian Universalism has a long-developed moral tradition\, one that inspires us to advocate for peace\, human dignity and justice for all people\, and to oppose systems and individuals who pursue total power and control. How does our tradition call us to respond to forces driving events in today’s world? Rev. DESCRIPTION:This service was written by Rev. Jami Yandle\, UU Transgender Outreach Specialist and will be delivered by Laura Gordon.\nHow do political realities shape our bodies and spirits? This service explores how chronic stress and being overwhelmed are not personal failures\, but deeply human responses to sustained\nthreat. Rooted in our UU values of interdependence\, this message invites us to rediscover community\, care\, and connection as sources of resilience and spiritual resistance. \nChild Care is provided.\n  \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!
