SUMMARY:Samhain Ritual - Pulling Back the Veil
DESCRIPTION:Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic?\nHave you or your family ever seen a spook\, spectre or ghost?\nIf the answer is “yes\,” then don’t wait another minute. SUMMARY:Dia de Los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Adriana Guerrero will deliver a presentation about Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).\nDuring Dia de los Muertos\, or the Day of the Dead\, the veil between the living and the dead is believed to thin\, allowing souls to briefly return to the world of the living to be with their families. This is a spiritual connection that celebrates life and death as a continuous cycle\, rather than focusing solely on loss. This sweet celebration honors loved ones by celebrating their lives and memories\, so that they are never truly gone. Adriana will discuss how we\, the living\, honor the dead through traditions like creating ofrendas with our deceased loved one’s  favorite foods and items\, and visiting gravesites to offer prayers and gifts. \n\n  \n\nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional but strongly advised. SUMMARY:Certain and Uncertain Promises.
DESCRIPTION:People complain that we live in uncertain times\, but what exactly is so bad about that? Is certainty all that it’s cracked up to be? How real is certainty anyway? And are there possibilities hidden in the uncertain? \n Seth Tichenor is a teacher\, scholar\, public lecturer\, and evangelist for the transformative power of philosophical discourse\, traditions\, and reflection. He has been giving philosophy talks\, teaching open philosophy classes\, and leading philosophy discussion groups\, all for the general public\, for over 30 years. He has also taught at Linfield College\, Oregon State University\, the University Of Hawaii\, and Concordia University\, as well as Clatsop Community College. \n Seth believes that philosophy\, in its many dimensions\, is an integral part of human experience\, both personally and communally\, and something everyone can benefit from encountering. Consequently\, he and his wife\, Gad Perez-Tichenor established “Philosofarian” in 2011 – a nonprofit public philosophy project that brings philosophical inquiry\, reflection\, classes\, and discourse to everyone in their community at no cost. It aims to build long-term communities of philosophical inquiry within the larger public; a vision encompassed in Philosofarian’s motto – “Talk\, Think\, Belong”. You can learn more about it by checking out its website\, philosofarian.org. \n Seth lives in Warrenton Oregon with Gad & their two nephews (Dutch & SJ) whom they are raising.\n Featured image courtesy of Dave Ambrose.

SUMMARY:CUUPS Imbolc Ritual
DESCRIPTION:PUUF CUUPS performs their Imbolc ritual. Observed on the night of January 31st into February 1st\, 2026\, Imbolc (IM-bolk or IM-olk) is the Celtic threshold where winter’s deep stillness feels its first soft stirring of life. It is the quickening in the belly of the earth\, the faint pulse beneath frost and stone\, the moment when the year inhales before it is ready to exhale spring. This is the holy tide of Brigid of the bright hearth\, of healing wells and ringing hammers\, of poems that arrive like sparks in the dark. At Imbolc we honor the light returning\, the milk of ewes swelling\, the seeds ready to burst forth into the sunlight. We stand between seasons\, with one foot in the long night\, the other in the dawn\, and we listen for the whisper of what seeks to be born in us. \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional but strongly advised. If you are not feeling well\, please wear a mask\, or attend via Zoom. \nChild Care Is Provided. \n \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:The Divine Feminine\, The Earth Mother
DESCRIPTION:Our Lay Leader this week is Steven Peterson. \nThe Topic: The Divine Feminine\, The Earth Mother \nIn the 19th century\, first-wave feminists were publishing ideas of a female deity\, and the suppression of women and female spirituality under the patriarchal Church. At the same time\, anthropologists began examining the ideas of prehistoric matriarchal Goddess cultures in the Mediterranean region\, with some claiming that female theologies emerged in Prehistoric Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period around 30\,000 years ago. \nDecades later\, starting from the 1970s into the current day\, the Goddess movement has emerged as an international cultural phenomenon. Women are recognized in many religious organizations as spiritual beings and are welcomed in leadership and teaching roles – we are moving in the direction of a post patriarchal society\, though it sometimes seems there are miles more to travel and much more work to be done in this area. \nWho or what is the Goddess? What is Goddess Spirituality? Theology or Thealogy? \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional but strongly advised. If you are not feeling well\, please wear a mask\, or attend via Zoom. \nChild Care Is Provided. \n \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:Mystery's Meetingplace"
DESCRIPTION:“Mystery’s Meetingplace”\n  \nReverend Heather Janules \nUnitarian Universalists often name the experience of “transcending mystery and wonder” as a foundational element of a spiritual life. Service written by Rev. Heather Janules\, UUA Congregational Life Staff in the New England Region\, and presented by Laura Gordon. \nArtwork by Rhonda Piasecki. SUMMARY:"Can We Be Our Brother's Keeper"
DESCRIPTION:Member Nancy Cook will approach this month’s theme from a variety of lenses\, including her own experiences as a mother\, sister\, instructor of literature\, environmental activist\, and engaged citizen of these challenging times. Her sermon will draw upon the Biblical story of Abel and Cain [Genesis 4.9]\, James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues\, shame researcher Brene Brown\, and wisdom gleaned through Al-Anon Family Groups who emphasize setting boundaries as an important form of self-care which allows for sustained\, genuine support of others. How can we resist injustice with an expansive sense of brotherhood while taking care not to overwhelm ourselves with the burdens of harsh judgment or fears for tomorrow? This week’s sermon will present one woman’s reflection on this important theme. \n \nChild Care Is Provided. \n \nJoin us for Coffee Hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!
