SUMMARY:Why Religious Community?
DESCRIPTION:Wildly unpredictable – no doubt that’s how most of us would describe events in our lives and in the world today.  As this pandemic persists into its third year amidst political and social uncertainty\, you may not seek escape through the latest Netflix series\, but through sustenance that nurtures hope and assurance that we are all in this together.  For many\, our religious community offers that sustenance and is the place where we can be reminded of life’s possibilities. \nRev. Carol McKinley is the affiliated community minister at the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation and is a member of the Pacific Northwest Region’s Healthy Congregations Team. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n\nDuring the Omicron surge\, we are back to Zoom service only. We are trying to “flatten the curve” to protect our hospitals and the more vulnerable members of our community. There will be no in-person services for a few more weeks\, at least.

SUMMARY:The 8th UU Principle
DESCRIPTION:Laura Gordon will talk about our newest UU principle:\nLove is the central tenet of our faith\, yet racism\, white supremacy and other oppressions are pervasive in our society. The 8th Principle project is asking the UUA Article II Commission and individual UU congregations to build the Beloved Community and adopt an 8th Principle: \n “We\, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association\, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

SUMMARY:John Lewis: Good Trouble
DESCRIPTION:John Lewis was an American statesman and civil rights activist who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. He was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966. Lewis was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States. In 1965\, Lewis led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. In an incident which became known as Bloody Sunday\, state troopers and police attacked the marchers\, including Lewis. \nA member of the Democratic Party\, Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1986 and served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district he represented included most of Atlanta. Due to his length of service\, he became the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. While in the House\, Lewis was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party\, serving from 1991 as a Chief Deputy Whip and from 2003 as a Senior Chief Deputy Whip. John Lewis received many honorary degrees and awards\, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
