SUMMARY:Summer Potluck at Coffenbury Lake\, Ft Stevens
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting at Coffenbury Lake in Ft. Stevens State Park on Sunday\, July 17 at noon for a potluck and social gathering.  We will not be meeting at the Presbyterian Church!  \nTo reach Coffenbury Lake from Astoria\, turn right off of Hiway 101 on Harbor Dr.  When you reach the 4-way stop at the west end of Hammond\, turn left on Lake Dr.  Caution: do not go straight into the historic area!  From Lake Dr.\, turn right at either the first or second entrance to Ft. Stevens and follow the signs to Coffenbury Lake.  As you enter the parking lot at Coffenbury Lake\, the shelter will be on your right.  You either need a State Parks pass or there is a fee station there.  Bring a dish to share\, a utensil to serve it with\,  and your own beverage.  We’ll provide the paper products.  If you want to help the environment\, you can bring your own washable plate and utensils.  Following our potluck meal\, those who would like to can walk around the lake.  There’s a nice 2-mile trail encircling the lake.  There can be mosquitoes\, so come prepared.  If you have an instrument\, bring it along.  Last year we enjoyed a great singalong.  Hope to see you all there.  We have lots of new members\, so this is a chance to get to know more of your PUUF friends. \nThere will be activities for children\, so there will be no separate RE program.

SUMMARY:UUA General Assembly Sunday Service: "The Deal on Those Days"
DESCRIPTION:We will Zoom in individually to the UUA General Assembly Sunday Morning Worship Service from 9:30 am-11:00 am. The title is “The Deal on Those Days”. The last few years have not been easy\, including in our local congregations. Whole swaths of members have simply stopped coming: COVID is confusing and polarizing. . . In this moment when so many of us might be wondering if we should just give up\, and relent\, now is the time instead to double down on our commitment to the local church-this unique. community that saves us and also breaks our hearts. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person. Masks are optional\, but due to rising cases of Covid\, strongly encouraged. SUMMARY:Restorative Justice - Laura Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Should we “Defund the Police”? The philosophy of justice held by the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee\, as discussed in the book “Covered With Night” by Nicole Eustace\, is what we would today call restorative justice. Their concept of building accountability\, creating a community of caring\, and supporting basic human rights can combine to create safety without policing\, prisons or punishment\, as discussed by Zach Norris in his book “Defund Fear”. Abolitionists call for transformative justice\, justice that does not bring further harm\, but that brings accountability and healing. SUMMARY:Making Peace with End of Life-Service
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Terri Daniel – This will include the sermon at noon\, a light lunch\, followed by a workshop of the same title from 2-4 p.m. \nDr. Terry Daniel is an interfaith hospice chaplain\, end-of-life educator\, and grief counselor certified in death\, dying\, bereavement\, and trauma support.  She conducts workshops throughout the U.S. and teaches at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.  We have an aging fellowship\, and most of us have had to deal with death\, severe illness\, and memory loss within our own families.  It is often very difficult to know how to help others (or yourself!) in these situations.  In this workshop\, Dr. Daniel will cover death and grief practices from a variety of cultural and religious perspectives\, how death is addressed in our modern medical system\, hospice and how it differs from palliative care\, family dynamics in end-of-life bereavement\, and creative rituals and ceremonies for death\, dying and grieving.  Registration forms will be sent out for the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Rev. Carol McKinley –  How are we\, as Unitarian Universalists\, to respond to attempts in recent months to ban books and censor honest accounts of history?  As a tradition rooted in a commitment to the use of reason and freedom of religious thought\, our long history as a faith that has been labeled a heresy can offer guidance. \nThe Rev. SUMMARY:Martineau Around the World Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Many have been curious about Dean and Tina’s adventures abroad\, so they will start their story.  It will take more than 1 service\, because 3 years is just too much to fit into such a small timeframe.  For this first part\, we will try to fit in discussing our motivations and reasons for going abroad\, how we decided on ESL/EFL teaching\, why we chose South Korea to start\, the process it all took to make it happen (esp with pets!)\, and the immediate cultural and personal differences we noticed and how we adjusted to living in a foreign country.  We will touch on how our story differs from others that we talked to\, and other fun anecdotes from our first bit of time abroad.  Anything we miss or don’t get to will be put into the inevitable next round. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person. Masks are now optional. SUMMARY:The Ku Klux Klan in Astoria
DESCRIPTION:Astoria’s African American history dates back to 1805\, when York traveled through the area as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A handful of sailors and fur traders came in the decades that followed. By the late 1800s\, a small number of Black residents called Astoria home\, but they were targets of discrimination from coworkers and business owners who refused to treat them as equal citizens. By the 1920s\, Oregon’s Ku Klux Klan was a significant presence in Astoria\, threatening Black residents who challenged white supremacy. This racist legacy was not limited to Blacks in Astoria. Chinese\, Japanese\, Indian\, Hawaiian\, and Native American residents of Astoria were also targets of the KKK. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person. Masks are now optional. If you are not feeling well\, please wear a mask\, or attend via Zoom. \nWe will have coffee hour after the service in Fellowship Hall.

SUMMARY:Helping Instead of Hurting: Palliative Care
DESCRIPTION:“Helping Instead of Hurting: How Palliative Care Can Increase Quality of Life and Reduce Suffering of Those Living with Chronic Conditions” – Jacqueline DeVaney\, Family Nurse Practitioner.  Palliative care is a branch of healthcare that is not well known or understood\, even amongst many health care providers and workers.  However\, the need for it grows especially as COVID strains healthcare staffing and resources\, and has potentially life-long consequences for many who have suffered from COVID.  Jacqueline DeVaney\, FNP\, will share  how palliative care focuses on individuals and their family members to enhance quality of life\, puts their needs and goals at the center of their healthcare team\, reduces healthcare costs\, and helps to avoid the inadvertent harms that sometimes occur due to common western healthcare practices. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~

SUMMARY:Why Religious Community?
DESCRIPTION:Wildly unpredictable – no doubt that’s how most of us would describe events in our lives and in the world today.  As this pandemic persists into its third year amidst political and social uncertainty\, you may not seek escape through the latest Netflix series\, but through sustenance that nurtures hope and assurance that we are all in this together.  For many\, our religious community offers that sustenance and is the place where we can be reminded of life’s possibilities. \nRev. Carol McKinley is the affiliated community minister at the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation and is a member of the Pacific Northwest Region’s Healthy Congregations Team. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n\nDuring the Omicron surge\, we are back to Zoom service only. We are trying to “flatten the curve” to protect our hospitals and the more vulnerable members of our community. There will be no in-person services for a few more weeks\, at least.

SUMMARY:The 8th UU Principle

SUMMARY:John Lewis: Good Trouble
DESCRIPTION:John Lewis was an American statesman and civil rights activist who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. He was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966. Lewis was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States. In 1965\, Lewis led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. In an incident which became known as Bloody Sunday\, state troopers and police attacked the marchers\, including Lewis. \nA member of the Democratic Party\, Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1986 and served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district he represented included most of Atlanta. Due to his length of service\, he became the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. While in the House\, Lewis was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party\, serving from 1991 as a Chief Deputy Whip and from 2003 as a Senior Chief Deputy Whip. John Lewis received many honorary degrees and awards\, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
