SUMMARY:Living the 7 UU Values
DESCRIPTION:We can probably recite the 7 Principles\, but do we know them by heart? Are our Principles just worthy aspirations divorced from everyday life\, or do our hearts call us to live our values of justice\, equity\, interdependence\, generosity\, transformation\, pluralism and love every day? Drawing upon a sermon written by Rev. Leslie Becknell Marx “Learning the Principles by Heart” we update it to review the 7 Values of our proposed new UU Values and Covenant.   \n\n\n  \n\n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. The service will also be live-streamed via Zoom for those who are not comfortable attending in person.  Masks are now optional. If you are not feeling well\, please wear a mask\, or attend via Zoom. \n  \n \nReligious Education for Children will occur during the regular service. \nContact Adriana at Puufreligioused@Pacuuf.org for more information. \n  \n \nWe will have coffee hour after the service in Fellowship Hall!

SUMMARY:Kristalnacht
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker via Zoom\, Ruth Lindemann lived through “Kristalnacht”\, She has graciously agreed to speak to us about the events leading up to “Kristalnacht”\, the event itself and what happened afterwards.  This is a “must hear” event\, so please tell your friends about it.  If you want to hear her story ahead of time\, her memoir is\ncalled “We Chose Survival”. What was Kristalnacht? In the early hours of November 10\, 1938\, Nazi storm troopers and Hitler Youth rampaged through Jewish neighborhoods across Germany\, leaving behind them a horrifying trail of terror and destruction. More than a thousand synagogues and many thousands of Jewish shops were destroyed\, while thirty thousand Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Kristallnacht—the Night of Broken Glass—was a decisive stage in the systematic eradication of a people who traced their origins in Germany to Roman times and was a sinister forewarning of the Holocaust. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria.

SUMMARY:Letting Go and Opening to Receiving
DESCRIPTION:When we let go of all the things that we cannot control\, when we stop shoulding on ourselves and others\, shouldn’ting on ourselves and others\, worrying about the future\, and wishing the past could have been different than it was\, then we open ourselves to the gift of the present moment. The only thing we have control over is ourselves in the present moment. And when we live in the present moment\, with gratitude and unconditional love and forgiveness for ourselves\, then we open ourselves to bountiful joy. \nMeredith Richardson is an empowerment coach and hypnotherapist. In 2018\, she left everything behind – her career\, her marriage\, and her country – to save herself. She had been a mediator and conflict coach\, and helped over 1\,500 people to navigate conflict successfully. \n  \n\n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. SUMMARY:Introduction to the Catholic Workers Movement
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to the Catholic Worker Movement: Building “a society where it’s easier to be good” \nMembers of the Simone Weil Catholic Worker in NE Portland will introduce the Catholic Worker movement\, focusing on the three key components of the Catholic Worker “program”: houses of hospitality\, roundtable discussions for “clarification of thought\,” and “agronomic universities.” They will share how their community tries to live into this vision through their two houses of hospitality and their agronomic university and communion economy projects. \nBio: The Simone Weil House was founded in 2019 as a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition. The Catholic Worker Movement was founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin during the Great Depression. What began as a newspaper grew into a movement of houses of hospitality whose aim is to “live in accordance with the justice and charity of Jesus Christ” through practices of nonviolence\, the works of mercy\, manual labor\, and voluntary poverty. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. SUMMARY:Threats to Democracy - Federal and state\, and possible solutions
DESCRIPTION:Americans are currently very divided between those on the political far right and those elsewhere on the political spectrum. Those on the political far right are seen as a major threat to democracy due to actions like the Jan 6 invasion of the US Capital as well as efforts to undermine voting rights at both the federal level and state level. However\, additional threats exist which are longer term that we need to focus our attention on; for instance\, like the military-industrial complex\, the US Supreme Court\, and the ever increasing level of income and wealth inequality. We will explore these other longer term threats. And look at what is coming up in the OR legislature and/or via the initiative process. \nDavid Delk Bio – \nDavid is a native Oregonian\, living in Portland\, formerly in Astoria for a short while.\, with his gay partner Tom of 30 years. He is currently a peace and social justice activist with Alliance for Democracy and 1st Unitarian Church in Portland. As a member of Oregon Honest Elections\, he is or has been a chief petitioner of initiatives at the local city\, county and state levels to enact limits on money in politics. He also serves as the chair of the Oregon Progressive Party\, on whose ticket he is running for US Congress in the OR 3rd District on a platform calling for reduction in monies spend on the annual “defense” budget and moving those funds to serve real human needs.

SUMMARY:Summer Potluck at Coffenbury Lake\, Ft Stevens
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting at Coffenbury Lake in Ft. Stevens State Park on Sunday\, July 17 at noon for a potluck and social gathering.  We will not be meeting at the Presbyterian Church!  \nTo reach Coffenbury Lake from Astoria\, turn right off of Hiway 101 on Harbor Dr.  When you reach the 4-way stop at the west end of Hammond\, turn left on Lake Dr.  Caution: do not go straight into the historic area!  From Lake Dr.\, turn right at either the first or second entrance to Ft. Stevens and follow the signs to Coffenbury Lake.  As you enter the parking lot at Coffenbury Lake\, the shelter will be on your right.  You either need a State Parks pass or there is a fee station there.  Bring a dish to share\, a utensil to serve it with\,  and your own beverage.  We’ll provide the paper products.  If you want to help the environment\, you can bring your own washable plate and utensils.  Following our potluck meal\, those who would like to can walk around the lake.  There’s a nice 2-mile trail encircling the lake.  There can be mosquitoes\, so come prepared.  If you have an instrument\, bring it along.  Last year we enjoyed a great singalong.  Hope to see you all there.  We have lots of new members\, so this is a chance to get to know more of your PUUF friends. \nThere will be activities for children\, so there will be no separate RE program.
