SUMMARY:Reparations for Black Americans
DESCRIPTION:Laura Gordon \nSlavery\, Jim Crow and continued systemic racism have resulted in a racial wealth gap between Black and White Americans.  Many advocate for cash reparations.  But repairing the harm will require more than just a onetime cash payment.  True repentance and repair for centuries of horrific violence is needed.  According to Maimonides’ Law of Repentance\, there are five steps we need to undertake:  1) confession\, or naming and owning the harm; 2) transformation; 3) making amends\, or restitution and accepting consequences; 4) apology; and 5) making different choices.  So while cash reparations may help to close the racial wealth gap\, only true repentance and repair will end white supremacy culture. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. SUMMARY:Institutional and Systemic Racism
DESCRIPTION:Tina Martineau \nInstitutional Racism is the term for forms of racism structured into the nation’s political and social institutions. Segregation\, red-lining\, and other such forms of active racism have been outlawed\, but the effects they had are still present today. We must be aware of this and actively work to address these ongoing issues as part of the fight against racism. \nTina has a BS in Sociology with minors in Anthropology and Psychology from Montana State University\, where she studied socio-cultural issues\, their historical roots\, and how they affected different social groups. Her focus on Justice Studies included classes on law and inequality and race and ethnicity. She observed some of these issues and biases first-hand working as a Detention Officer for 6 years at the Gallatin County Detention Center. \n\n\n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. SUMMARY:Return Again\, Return to the Home of Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Reverend Patti Pomerantz\n\n\nI became Unitarian Universalist 37 years ago; before that I was a Reform Jew. Now\, at the end of my working career as a UU minister\, I find myself having to revisit that age-old question: “Why Am I UU?” I explored this same topic when I served this congregation many years ago. I will explore theology\, spirituality and how to approach the problematic culture in which we live. \nPatti retired from parish ministry in June 2022\, after serving the Eastrose UU Fellowship in Gresham\, OR for 8 years.  Since then\, in addition to dealing with her mother’s estate\, she’s been trying to figure out\, once again\, what she will do when she grows up. \n  \n~Open hearts\, open minds\, room for all theologies\, including yours~\n  \nWe are meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria.
