Pacific Unitarian

Universalist Fellowship

Astoria, Oregon, USA - Serving the lower Columbia river area of Oregon and Washington

WHO WE ARE

We are a growing,  vibrant congregation celebrating our liberal religion in the lower Columbia area as a part of the Unitarian Universalist worldwide community. Our members live from Manzanita, Oregon to the south -  to the tip of the Long Beach peninsula in Washington state to the north; from the Pacific ocean to the west to Skamokawa, WA to the east.  We meet weekly on Sunday at 11:00 AM with a coffee hour following and have reading groups and other activities during the week from September through early June. In the summer we meet the occasional Sunday with more informal services.

Calendar for May 2008

May 4 – “Raising Cain” – Rev. Tim Haley

This sermon will explore one of humanity’s most common traits, something we are all familiar with on a day to day basis. It sometimes can be a major barrier to our growth as individuals and as a species. It’s worthy of some thought and reflection: the theme of “blame.”

Rev. Haley is one of our favorite speakers. He is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and has served churches in Virginia, Washington, and Oregon. He also holds a Master of Social Work degree and has had over 14 years of medical social work experience, specializing in hospice.

Note: Potluck and Board Meeting will follow the service.

May 11 – Mother’s Day – Nancy Cook – “A Mom’s Perspective”

Nancy is a member of PUUF and became a mom on December 22, 2007. She and baby Izzy are very special to the fellowship.

May 18 – “How UU Works” – Rev. Patti Pomerantz

Do you ever wonder why churches make decisions the way they do? Unitarian Universalist congregational life has unique challenges – and potential. Patti will tell us what congregational polity means, where it comes from, and how talking about governance can be interesting.

We’re delighted to have Rev. Patti back with us again for her 7th sermon this year in a series called “Living Our Values”. Patti has served as Interim Minister for the UU Church of the Palouse in Moscow, ID and the UU Community Church in Hillsboro, OR.

Annual Meeting follows the service.

May 25 – “Why You Should Care About What is Going On in Iraq” – Adele Kubein

Adele Kubein is a graduate instructor in the Department of Anthropology at Oregon State University. Her undergraduate degree is in political science. Adele’s daughter served in the Oregon National Guard for ten years, and was deployed to Mosul, Iraq at the start of the occupation, where she escorted convoys as a gunner and was responsible for heavy equipment maintenance. Adele’s daughter was injured and permanently disabled in Iraq in 2004.

Adele is a member of the national executive committee of Military Families Speak Out as well as a member of the local Oregon Chapter. She has traveled to Japan as a guest speaker for peace groups and has marched with the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina. As a teenager she was active in the peace movement during the Vietnam War. Her speeches and op-ed pieces are heard, read and circulated in the United States and internationally.

Commonly Asked Questions

Unitarian Universalist churches are similar to other faith groups in many ways.  We sing, we recite valued words together, we share each others joys and sorrows.  But we do not define the spirit that binds us.
